Letter About Beach Rubbish |
May I express my support for Cutti Didi (Jnr) and his letter in last weeks GIP, regarding pollution on our beaches. As a regular Beachcomber, I traverse the stretch between the Sergeants Mess and Officers Mess at least once a day looking for shells and other items of interest. Unfortunately, I spend half the time and effort removing shoals of broken glass and depositing them in a safe place, i.e. atop of the sea wall, where they are pretty obvious and can be avoided. It is plain to see that the nearer one gets to the Officers Mess, the more often the little piles of glass appear. Why, oh why, must people persist in indulging in the sport? (pastime?) of throwing empty beer cans and bottles into the sea? I know that these items are non-returnable, but would it not be worthwhile putting one or two pence deposit on them, in an effort to ensure that they are returned to the correct destination, the dustbin. I think that the majority of Gan personnel are aware of the need to wear some kind of footwear on the beach or during bathing, but some must be unaware, especially visitors. If only one person avoids a nasty gash on the underside of the foot and several days of painful hobbling, this effort would be worthwhile. Haven't we enough rubbish washed up on the beaches already? So come on SNCO and Officer Gannites, think about it, and let's see if we can't improve things 'between' us. `Blisters`. SASF |
